Verify claims

Anyone can post a screenshot that looks real, or even fake a tweet entirely. It took me all of 2 seconds to find a fake tweet generator online.
It's all about verifying. That extra minute you take to check if something is valid will leave you more informed than most.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to:

Reverse search images or text
Look for original sources
Decide whether a claim is real, fake, or just taken out of context

This kind of "investigation" is how journalists and fact-checkers separate truth from noise.

Why This Tweet is Fake

🚨 Bot-like Username

The username "Firstname Bunchofnumbers"-type names (like "John12345" or "Sarah789") is a classic sign of a bot account. Real users typically have more creative or personal usernames.

🚨 Inflammatory Buzzwords

Buzzwords and phrases like "woke" are designed to trigger emotional responses.

🚨 No Sources or Verification

The tweet makes dramatic claims and uses an inflammatory pic. But where are the links to news articles or official sources?

🚨 Out of Context Photo

The image image in that fake Tweet I made is from the 2017 Charlottesville race riots, not the 2025 LA ICE protests. Without proper attribution and context, photos can be misleading.

Remember: Always look for multiple sources, check the account's history, and be skeptical of posts that seem designed to make you angry or afraid.

Why This Tweet is Fake

🚨 Unsupported Statistics

The tweet throws out a specific number ($2000/month) but provides no source, official announcement, or government documentation to back it up. Real news would cite official sources.

🚨 Fraudulent News Source

I made up the account "@bestnewsonx" with the generic name "NewsFlash." These are often fake sources. They sound legitimate but have no real journalistic credibility or verification process (I definitely don't).

🚨 Political Commentary Disguised as News

The snarky comment about "nanny state winning again" reveals this is political commentary, not objective reporting. A credible news source would try to separate facts from opinion.

🚨 Confirmation Bias

A lot of fake news is based on a kernel of truth, and relies on your confirmation bias. Confirmation bias is when you're looking for information that confirms your existing beliefs, and ignore information that contradicts them. This Tweet builds on the common knowlege that Scandinavian countries have generous social programs.

Remember: Even if something sounds plausible based on your existing beliefs, always verify claims with official sources and be wary of accounts that mix news with political commentary.

Why This Tweet is Misleading

🚨 Verified Account ≠ Accurate Information

Even though this is a REAL TWEET from JK Rowling's verified account, that doesn't mean the information is correct. Verified accounts can still spread misinformation or make mistakes.

🚨 Hot Button Topic Bias

Trans women in sports is a highly controversial topic. When people see content about this issue, their existing biases can override their critical thinking, making them more likely to believe false claims without verification.

🚨 Blatantly Incorrect Information

Imane Khelif is a cisgender woman from Algeria, a country where being transgender is criminalized. The claim that she is a trans woman is completely false and easily verifiable with a simple search.

🚨 No Fact-Checking Before Sharing

This tweet shows how even influential people can share incorrect information without verifying it first. The fact that it's from a famous author doesn't make the claim any more accurate.

Remember: Always fact-check claims, especially on controversial topics that trigger strong emotional responses. Don't let your biases or the source's credibility prevent you from verifying information.
